The illicit trade in the cigarette industry is booming.🚩🚩🚩
Are key investigative units at the Revenue Service, specifically looking at tackling the illicit cigarette industry doing enough?

    • So since 2014 till now there has been no investigation, nor clamping down on the growing rate of the illicit trade in the cigarette industry. The is more than 12,000 jobs that are directly produced in the industry. With more than 30,000 dependents mostly on farms in deep rural areas where other jobs are hard to find more than 100,000 jobs are at stake through the entire value chain. The total market is 30 to 33 billion cigarettes and according to the estimate this year the only tax that will be paid is about 16 to 17 billion. So there’s a lot of cigarettes on which taxes are not paid. And there’s a huge return on investment for SARS therefore they need to act immediately. The second thing is cleaning out of the market by going out to the big wholesalers and retailers who are selling these products below the tax rates. There is an Eastern Cape judgement of 2015 that said cigarettes selling below tax rates should be deemed illicit and can be seized which could also be instrumental in curbing the issue. There is a lot that needs to be done in terms of the industry both on the illegal and legal manufacturers within the cigarette industry.
